Bike To Work Day May 15th – Friends of Hyde Park, Quacks, JuiceLand, Bike Austin

Friends of Hyde Park has partnered with Bike Austin, Quacks and JuiceLand to create our own fueling station here in the hood for those participating.

For those of you that don’t know, Bike to Work Day will be happening on Friday, May 15th. There will be fueling stations all across the city providing food, drinks and overall support for people riding their bikes to work. It is meant to encourage bikers of ALL LEVELS find new ways to get to work, leave the car at home for a day, and discover (or re-discover) the joys of bike-commuting.

So here’s my plea: get your bike ready, dust off your helmet and bike to work on Friday, May 15th.

Our fueling station will be located at the Duval Center parking lot, between Dolce Vita and Julios, just off the southbound bike lane on Duval St. The fueling station will be open from 7.00am to 9.30am.

Stop by for some complimentary food and coffee from Quacks, or some free juice from JuiceLand. Bike Austin will be handing out free tote bags and swag. And Bike Austin will throw a great party at Cheer up Charlies that night with free beer for folks that participate!

A few things to keep in mind when bike-commuting for the first time:

1) Be safe. Always wear your helmet and bike lights.

2) Make a plan. There are lots of bike lanes around the city, make sure you’ve got a good plan of what streets you are taking.

3) Don’t forget about public transit. Even for those of us not in the best of shape, bike-commuting is still an option! A good way to start is to bike one way and take the bus the way back. All Austin buses have bike racks.

If anyone has any questions about Bike to Work day don’t hesitate to contact me. I’d be glad to help anyone plan a route, or suggest ways to get your bike in shape before that day. Ricky Hennessy, one of our members, has even volunteered to do some bike maintenance for those of you whose bikes might have been stationary for a bit too long!
